Say it ain’t snow! SaskEnergy shares tips on staying safe this winter

Winter has officially begun! People are staying inside to escape the cold, and furnaces, heaters and other fuel-burning appliances are running more often. Here are SaskEnergy’s top three natural gas safety tips to keep you and your family safe from Old Man Winter. Sometimes you just need to vent: Keep outdoor vent openings free of frost, ice and snow. Saskatchewan winters can be windy, causing snow and ice to build up in nooks and crannies. Your home’s exterior appliance vents are no exception. Blocked vents can cause appliances to malfunction, but they can also have much more deadly...

Setting Commodity Rates

Natural gas prices can fluctuate The commodity rate is the Gas Consumption Charge on your bill. SaskEnergy follows the regulatory standard practice to recover the cost of natural gas sold to customers without any markup. As a utility, we should not incur a profit or a loss on the sale of natural gas. As natural gas prices fluctuate, the cost of buying natural gas each month varies. Because we don't know the total cost of gas for a particular period of time, SaskEnergy uses a Gas Cost Variance Account (GCVA) to balance the changes in costs and revenues over time. This approach helps provide you...

Severe Weather

Nature can be unpredictable Severe or unforeseen weather has the potential to impact natural gas service to your home or business. While our system is designed to operate in extreme conditions, nature can create situations that go beyond anyone’s control.

Snow and Ice

SaskEnergy’s natural gas equipment is designed to operate safely in Saskatchewan’s temperatures. However, heavy snow, ice buildup, or unsafe snow removal can damage our facilities and increase the risk of a gas leak or disruption to service. To ensure the natural gas equipment remains operating when you need it the most, we recommend the following: Keep the meter, regulator and shut-off valve free of snow and ice. Do not use a snow plow or snow blower near the meter or riser. Avoiding pushing or piling the snow around the meter, riser or exterior equipment vents. Watch for melting snow from...

Staff connect with Indigenous culture in SaskEnergy’s first sweat lodge

Attending a sweat lodge for the first time can be a powerful experience. Just ask Kendra Lovas, an employee at SaskEnergy in Regina. “At first, it was hot and dark, my heart was beating fast, and I felt like my skin was burning,” says Kendra. “After the first break, I wasn’t sure if I would go back in, but I told myself that I needed to give it a chance, and I’m glad I did. It was a great experience.” SaskEnergy is committed to building meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities. One way we have done this is through hosting feasts and pipe ceremonies. This was the first time...
